BACK TO IN THE KNOW

2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is a TECH MASTERPIECE

2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS
This is the new Mercedes-Benz CLS. The famed four-door coupe ditched some of its styling distinctiveness prior to accepting what will become a new corporate design language. The front end has a much more natural design compared to the previous-gen cars. It also gives us a hint of the AMG GT with wide gaping mouth and concave front grille. As this should be an extreme variation of coupe demeanor, the shape of the roof, the back end, and the door line are similar to what we have seen on previous CLS cars.

2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS Will Be a Success

Even though the car is beautiful, it hides its saloon-like qualities in the coupe shape the world is fond of. Mercedes-Benz had to come up with something new but still familiar within the Mercedes-Benz brand, so it ended up with a rear-end featuring somewhat strange tail lights. Despite its different design, the CLS will sell just fine. Mercedes-Benz sold more than 350,000 units of the expensive hunk of metal since its introduction almost 15 years ago.

Here is a car introducing us with the modern Mercedes-Benz three-liter inline-6 engine with a 48-volt electric system. The advanced electrical system made it possible for Mercedes to integrate 22hp powerful starter motor. That on top of the 366hp turbo power from an inline-6. The aim is to offer V8 power and responsiveness with six-cylinder engine efficiency and composure. Overboost is available as well. In short instances, the electric motor can provide up to an astonishing 184 lb-ft of torque.

Result?

60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Fast, but not exactly AMG-worthy numbers. Do not worry though, we will probably have to wait only for a few months before getting to know the AMG CLS53 and the extreme AMG CLS63.

Tech Gizmos Rivaling Silicon Valley

Don’t get me wrong here. I mentioned the S-class twice here, but the CLS is actually heavily leaning toward the E-class. It is based on top of its architecture and it takes the interior prospects of the E-Class. But don’t get upset, the E-Class is a magnificent car and the CLS interior proves it.

Taking the 12.3-inch widescreen instrument panel and infotainment system directly from the E-class, the CLS shows where it fits in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It does, however, have some unique features - lights around air vents, special three rear seat bench which actually looks like two distinctive seats and 63 different options of ambient lighting.

For now, channeling all the power to all four wheels definitely seems to fit in the market of today. But Mercedes-Benz does offer some other options. Three suspension systems are available - standard steel spring and dampers, adjustable Air Suspension, or the air suspension with Mercedes Air Body Control. This is when you need to go S-class in your CLS.

Let Mercedes tell you a bit about the lights: “The ULTRA RANGE high beam of the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps produce the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beam headlamps remaining above the reference value of 1 lux over a distance of more than 650 meters. Car-to‑X communication is a further trailblazing safety feature.”

"The new CLS is a design icon as the archetype of the four-door coupé. In line with our design philosophy of sensual purity, we have reduced its DNA in an extremely puristic way and at the same time emotionally charged it with elegant beauty", says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG.

If you are in the market for a luxury 4-door coupe, you most definitely need to take a serious look at the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS!
